Decided to play again (cause it’s very satisfying ngl) and got stuck on this screen
What do I do to get out of here lol? image.png

Oh, it says to press Backspace on the page. I wish this note was in the game too

That's good feedback, I'll be sure to add a clear way to get out of menus, perhaps a "back" visible button.

Wow! This was really good! Such a simple and fun gameplay loop, and you also managed to make all enemies different in how you defeat them. Not boring at all and very fun to play. Played for like 10-15 minutes and wanted more tbh, but got frustrated when I fell into a hole again.

But I have a few questions/suggestions:

  1. It’d really help if the game had an in-game tutorial or at least some controls guide when you begin. I didn’t look at the page and started playing immediately and was confused for 2-3 tries. The game was fun enough so I continued anyway and learned on the go.
  2. I think having more healing items spawn would help greatly, because I died a lot without seeing them at all. Also, if you continue developing this game, I suggest adding a jumping ability. This will allow for more enemy variety and add a lot of cool platforming. Plus, it will help avoid ugly deaths. I died a few times because I locked myself in a strip of land that led to a hole :(
  3. Maybe somehow highlight the holes? The ones that are singular and are placed in the ground are light brown, while the ground is just brown with a texture on it, and I noticed the holes only at the last second or just fell to my death, lol.
  4. How good do you have to be to reach an A or S rank? XD I tried my best to get 1000 points and get damaged as little as possible and still got a D. Not complaining, just curious haha
  5. This gameplay loop + the vibes and the style are PERFECT for some kind of a horror game. Something like that SNES creepypasta. I’m looking forward to what you’ll come up with next if you’re going to continue this game, because the premise and the execution are a perfect foundation for something more. Also reminded me of KIRA’s Basilisk-SNES game.

Also, how did you make the background on this itch page a gif? I tried myself but every time it was either a file size problem or the gif stopped playing after the next reload T_T

Thanks for taking the time to try the game and give such detailed feedback. I'll try to answer briefly:

  • 1.I'm personally not a fan of explicit tutorials or hand-holding in games, but I do think it's important for the player to be able to understand the mechanics fairly quickly, so I'll try to come up with something that strikes a good balance.
  • 2 & 3. there's currently an easy mode (accessible in the options menu), but it currently just halves the damage received. As per jump I did consider it before but I'm still unsure if it would ultimately enhance the gameplay or not. The current procedural level generator is fairly basic, and so it leaves those tiny holes which I agree are pretty nasty. I think for the final version I will have handmade levels and I'll either leave those out, or add a checkpoint system to to not make them so frustrating.
  • 4. It's all about the sprint kills! currently the formula is: performance = kills + (sprint_kills * 2) - damage * 2, but that's sort of outdated now, as it doesn't take score into consideration so I might change that.
  • Funny you should say, I am a massive fan of Kira's work, and actually playing Lunacid was what motivated me finally get serious about game dev. This game was just meant to be a simple experiment before attempting something more ambitious, but just can't seem to put it down, so I definitely want to flesh this out into a full game.
  • About the gif background, not sure if it will apply to your case but I converted footage of the game into gofs and then stitched them together in gimp as a larger gif file, just make sure you set the number of repeats to loop forever. Hope that helps!
